Sexual sadism refers to an abnormal psychological condition in which an individual derives sexual excitement from the psychological and physical pain of a nonconsenting person. Often, this demographic may experience intense fantasies concerning a variety of different themes, including—but not restricted to—the biting, whipping, and/or restriction of an individual, which may occur in tandem with observable discomfort. In the DSM-5-TR, a diagnostic instrument published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), classifies these intense sexual interests as a paraphilic disorder called sexual sadism disorder (SSD).
